First project size approximately 8 x 10 to hone your skills. We have some free beginner patterns available. Future projects can be found in the many pattern books in Debra’s personal collection for class use. If you would like to create an original design, Deb will look it over for “cutability”. Sorry, Deb does not have the time to create an original pattern for you.

If you are working on a more advanced project it is recommended that you purchase a work surface (Homasote Board). We stock 24” x 24” boards, but David will cut custom sizes for larger projects. “Layout Blocks” are also recommended, also available at D & D.

Please initial tools in case they get left behind so we can set them aside for you.

Please be respectful of the time and allow time to clean up your work area.

If you do not feel well please stay home.

Class guidelines

Our goal is for everyone to learn as much as possible, and have a good time doing so.  Instructors, whether it be Debra or David enjoy sharing our knowledge.  If at any time you feel you need better understanding of something, regardless of who is instructing, please let Debra know and she will work with you until you have a clear understanding of whatever the problem was.  Classes are 2 1/2 hours long, please be aware of that if you are cutting or foiling a project. Please give yourself time to clean up your workspace. If you are using studio tools please return them to the appropriate hook or drawer.  Please do not start soldering a project if you do not have time to complete it and neutralize the flux. If you started soldering a project when you came in and haven't finished you are welcome to stay to finish and neutralize the flux, save the patina and polish for the next class.

We understand everyone has cellphones and some people need to take calls, if you need to take a call please take it outside.

Normally, 6 sessions is enough to complete a project. They consist of:

Session 1:  Our goal is for you to leave feeling comfortable cutting. After practicing random cuts     using a straight edge and cutting square you will be shown how to cut out a pattern with pattern shears and have an understanding of cutting as close as possible to the pattern.

Session 2:  Cutting, grinding and laying out your project

Session 3:  Complete work started in Session 2, start foiling which can be completed at home.

Session 4:  If your foiling is complete you will be ready to solder.  Please be sure whoever is         teaching checks your foiling to be sure you are ready to solder.  Good foiling is an important part of a good finished product.

Session 5:  Framing and completing your project, this includes adding patina and polishing.

Session 6:  Some projects take a 6th session to complete.  If you finished in session 5 you can start another project.  On the second project we try to let you go through the steps but we are certainly there for any questions.

Many people continue taking additional sessions after they have completed their first project.  We encourage this and enjoy watching people hone their skills.  During future sessions people are working more independently and are expected to understand if the instructor is teaching someone a technique for the first time they will answer questions once the beginner understands what they need to do.  As instructors we both try to get to everyone in the room. Sometimes more than one person needs our attention and we are aware of that and will try our best to get to you as quickly as possible.  We try to go in order but sometimes when we see a question will be quick it may be answered before something that will take some time.

We appreciate your business and will stand behind every product purchased here, we cannot stand behind products purchased elsewhere.
